Repatriation still in the air.

Germans advance into Belgium but one side of their wedge is being attacked already.

The papers, which go to H.Qs. every day, are still up there. Japs will not allow distribution for some reason.

((Who was the "F.H." who spoke for the first time since July '41? That was long before the fighting, so their silence wasn't connected with any wartime traumas.

Possible candidates:

  • Frederick Ivan Hall - Executed in 1943
  • Frank Henry William Haynes - Died in 1943
  • F R Hearther - Repatriated to USA in 1942
  • Francis Noble Hill - mentions of F N Hill in R E Jones's diary strongly suggest they were having conversations

Hara inspected some of the Rms. 

Orders to remain in our rooms 2 to 4pm cancelled even though “the Slug” came in for the purpose of Rm inspection. ((Who was "the Slug"?))

Yesterdays paper released. 

Tokyo raided 27th. Russians gain in Budapest.

Todays paper kept at H.Qs. 

Lorry in 2.30pm & 6.30pm with veg.

Wedged in big window frame in Dentists place.

Washed some clothes.

Workers’ oil & sugar, also bread issued. Cigs now Y11 per pkt.

Mary sent up a lovely chow, chicken, sausage, egg, noodles lettuce & onions & it made our own chow look pretty sick.

Quite a few saw the New Year in, bells were rung & Auld Lang Syne sung. Everyone full of optimism!

Japan admits seriousness of present difficulties which, Yonia says, must be overcome if victory is to be obtained. Axis sent telegrams to each other averring their determination to win as usual. German counter-offensive definitely quashed.

Col. came out noon & left 4pm.

Gimson gave lecture on Trade Unions & Social Legislation in British Colonies. Finney gave a suitable reply in which he said he hoped that before the year was far spent we should all be back on our jobs. ((Probably J Finnie or A H Finnie.)) My job seems likely to fizzle out.

Hitler’s N.Y. speech very enlightening & it gives us great hope for Germany’s early collapse.

Task force W of Luzon. ((Allied forces would start landing on Luzon, the largest island in the Phillipines, tomorrow morning, starting the Battle of Luzon.)) Turkey severed dip. rels. with Japan 3rd. Kyushu raided 6th. Some guff re Soviet trouble with US & British re Poland.
