1930s Hong Kong photo wrapper, by Modern Photo Supplies Co.

This photo wrapper contained several photos made by Willem Kien, in Hong Kong in the 1930s. As director of Holland-China Trading Company, he had been working in Hong Kong in the late 1890s to 1910s and visited the China East coast from time to time in the 1930s.

Modern Photo Supplies Co. was located at Queen's Road Central, in or near Queen's Theatre Building in Hong Kong.

Portrait of Willem Kien (1877, Arnhem - 1970, The Hague), who was educated in Dresden and lived there with his family.

Ca. 1898 he went to China to work. In 1903 he became representative of Holland-China Trading Company (HCHC) in Shanghai, when the company was founded. Charles would join the company in 1938, first as a trainee in the Rotterdam head office and then in Shanghai, in 1939. <Read more ...>

Handover of military areas to the HK Government

Construction of Harcourt Road

After the end of WW2, the military and naval premises were repaired from war damages and used further on. Mainly on Hong Kong Island, these areas were situated right in the centre of the developing city. Any expansion to the east was impeded by these areas, mainly in the aspect of traffic (i.e. motor vehicles). <Read more ...>

This Holland-China Trading Company photo shows Charles' friend and colleagues Phil Beekmeijer, last row, third from the left and Karel Baggerman. Charles is last row, right from the large pillar, fourth man.

Hong Kong, group of young men relaxing, ca. 1900

Do you perhaps recognise the patch of land, somewhere near The Peak (is my guess)?

And what about the structure: straw, held up by poles. Any thoughts on what this is?

Tennis Match, Braeside Hong Kong, 1909

The person who made this photo, Willem Kien, was director at the company which Charles worked for, Holland-China Trading Company (HCHC). HCHC had offices in Rotterdam, London, Hong Kong, Shanghai and Tientsin (Tianjin). He lived at The Peak. On Gwulo.com, I found the address of Braeside: 20 MacDonnell Road, also at The Peak. For Hong Kong residents, it must have been an excellent place for leisure. <Read more ...>

Hong Kong - Macau steamliner Fat Shan (1887-1933) in Hong Kong

Charles Gesner van der Voort (1916-1991) worked for Holland-China Trading Company (HCHC) in Shanghai; it also had offices in Hong Kong and Tientsin (Tianjin). One of its first directors, Mr. Willem Kien, worked in China from 1898. After HCHC was founded in 1903, he worked for the company in Hong Kong and Shanghai.
