The original caption under this photograph reads : : On the right is shown the pier in the harbour of Hongkong where the launch was moored when its boiler exploded causing the deaths of 35 persons" 

This was one illustration within a ten-page article by Professor C. A Middleton Smith about the need for more supervision of engineering and mechanization in Hong Kong and China

1930 New Automatic Telephone System

The new automatic telephone system became effective on 4 May 1930. The use of magneto telephones was discontinued. With the change, new 5-digit telephone numbers were introduced.
