Hotz s'Jacob & Co.: 1900 trade mark registration - two ladies from Hunan

Charles Gesner van der Voort (1916-1991) had started his career in Rotterdam, at Holland-China Trading Company (HCHC). In 1938, he went to Shanghai for the firm. The Japanese interned him, and most other Dutch nationals, from 1943-45. In camp, he met his wife Nancy and they married after the war. After a leave in The Netherlands, they returned to the Orient, where Charles continued to work for HCHC in Hong Kong.

Official deed Holland-China Trading Company installing W. Kien as representative, 1903

Charles worked for Holland-China Trading Company (HCHC) in Shanghai. Willem Kien was made representative at the start of the firm in 1903, later he became director.

Little archival material is available today, as the Rotterdam office was bombed by German airplanes at the start of World War II in the Netherlands, in May 1940, so I am particularly pleased this deed survived, going back to the very start of the company.

Cropped from this photo.

A steam roller used for compaction and levelling roads. Likely the one referred to in The Public Works Report for 1898:

...... the ordering of a ten-ton steam road roller from England.

1900s TST Cameron Road

Originally attributed to Humphreys Avenue, but it is Cameron Road (see comment below).

A steam roller is approaching from the right hand side.
