Central, Cricket ground from Cheero Club

Date picture taken (to nearest decade for older photos):

The Cheero Club was housed in several single storey wooden huts built round the edges of the Murray barracks parade ground.  In 1958, Service personnel could get a bed there for $HK1 a night - the same rate as charged at the China Fleet Club on the Gloucester Road waterfront in Wan Chai.  In the long hut, overlooking the tram track and the cricket ground, the club had a dining room with good value meals, a barber's shop, a confortable lounge and a games room with snooker and table tennis tables.

I think that the fares were 20 cents upstairs and 10 cents downstairs.  Before the days of the MTR, and apart from taxis, the trams probably provided the quickest way of getting from Shau Kei Wan to Central.  The seats were made of slatted wood and the roofs were not always watertight during heavy rain. - but then as now they were a great way of seeing the bustling street life as you trundled along.  The only part of the journey where you held your breath was when the trams inched across the bridge over the very smelly Bowrington canal.

Peak Tram and new Richmond Houses

Nearly got it. By the end of 2002 the new Richmond Houses A-D are under construction, so second generation Richmond House was probably demolished in 2001 (in November 2000 it was still standing). That was an error, second generation was already gone by end of 1999!
