1887 Peak Directory

This first list is before the Peak Tram opened in 1888.

Mystery photos # 2

Three more mystery photos, but with a different background: This week and next I'm working on a paid project for local publisher FormAsia. The task is to provide accurate background information on a selection of photographs, for use in a future book.

Here are the three that have me stumped - all suggestions welcome (please click any photo to see more detail):

The first shows two identical houses on a hillside.

1919 Ladies Directory

Barker Road on the Peak was well established.   On the Peak, a sequential address scheme was in place instead of the old RBL (Rural Building Lot) numbers.  Chamberlain Road is what we now call Peak Road, leading down from the Upper Peak Tram terminus.

Mystery photos # 1

"A friend of mine recently found some old black & white negatives in her cupboard. I transferred some of them to positives and a lot of them are of Little Sai Wan and staff. You’re most welcome to have them."

Many thanks to the above contributor (who wants to remain anonymous) for getting touch from the UK.

Here are the first few, more to follow. Apart from #4, any ideas of dates & locations? (Click any image for a larger, zoomable view).

1890 Ladies Directory

The Peak Tram was now open, and so there are several more listings on the Peak.

The Hong Kong Directory

... which was part of The Chronicle & directory for China, Corea, Japan, the Philippines ...

... and in 1884 it starting publishing a "Ladies Directory".

These are not online, but you are allowed to make photocopies for personal use, which I have done.  And so, may I present the "Ladies" of Hong Kong ...

The negotiations leading to the Joint Declaration

What we got was a "war of words" between the three sides. China suspected that Britain would strip Hong Kong of all its assets and return a worthless colony to China.

Indeed, rather a lot of people in Hong Kong joked, during this phase, that Britain should indeed restore Hong Kong to its original condition before returning it!

I believe he was involved in putting a radar unit on Tai Mo Shan.
