Location of movie

Was the movie "Suzie Wong" actually shot on location in Hong Kong?  I saw some scenes were pretty much had me convinced as being shot in Hong Kong but the rest seemed to be very "Hollywoodish".

1900 pg283-297 started

This is the latest Jurors List we're making searchable - here's how to join in, it'll only take around 20-30 minutes of your time.

The job is to take the previous year's list, then work through it page-by-page and edit in any changes so it matches this year's list.

Step 1. Check the comments below to see which was the last page someone has started typing. You'll work on the next page. eg if the last comment is 'started page 290', you'll be working on page 291.

1899 Jurors List

[Found what you were looking for? If yes, please could you leave a comment below and tell us about your search? We're interested to learn more about the people and companies in these lists. Thanks, David]

This Jurors List was published in the Hongkong Government Gazette on 27th Feb, 1899. A copy of the original document is available online at HKGRO: (If you just see a 'Hong Kong Government Reports Online' screen, please click the link again. For some reason the first click doesn't always work, but the second one does.)

Streets or Buildings?

A discussion about how to record addresses from the Jurors Lists, so they are easy to search and use later.

A chapter of scandals, and the rise of the 1997 issue

May I draw your attention to the rather architecturally undistinguished white office tower in the middle of this picture?

Today, it's the Bank of America Tower.

When built, in 1970, it was the Gammon Building, named after the still - prominent HK construction firm who built it as a speculative office block.

It was once at the centre of the greatest corporate bankruptcy in Hong Kong's history - the Carrian case.

What a pity that the images in this web site couldn't be viewed by iphone/ipad. Would you consider to improve it?

'Beach Chalets' in Tsuen Wan district

There are at least 4 old buildings - pre-war - on the steps down from Castle Peak Road to Ho Mei Beach in Tsuen Wan district which I can only describe as, at a guess, old beach chalets.   I was wondering if anyone knows the background history to these ?    You have to take a look to see the curiosity value in them - apologies, no photos this time!

The steps to the beach are next to the Airport Core Programme Exhibition Centre - in the old Homi Villa built for the Ruttonjee family and later British Army quarters.

Building on pok fu lam reservoir road

Any idea what the old stone building (it looks like a house) just after the barrier across the road from the reservoir is.  Next to the Water Supplies dept. flats on Pok Fu Lam Reservoir road?

It looks recently abandoned as there are window aircon units in it.

Gilmans in London

My grandfather, Henry John Cleere (1851-1936), worked for Gilmans in the City of London until his retirement in the early 1920s, when I believe he was Chief Clerk. I remember Sir Charles Trinder, a former Chairman of the Ellerman Line and Lord Mayor of London, telling me that he remembered my grandfather as "a tall distinguished gentleman who was widely respected." We have in the family a bed-table inscribed "To H.J.
