The dawn of the Golden Age (mainly about money...)

The HK$ had evolved from the Trade Dollar, but was linked to Sterling until the 1960s, when the devaluation of Sterling caused Hong Kong to move out of the Sterling Area. The HK$ then led a life of its own until the disastrous and spectacular Hong Kong property crash of 1983 (we'll get back to that) which caused a "run" on the currency.

Mak Fung Photo Exhibition

Mak Fung Photo Exhibition
There is a really interesting photo exhibition on show at the Upperstation Gallery. The exhibition showcases photos of old Hong Kong from the 50s & 60s by the photographer Mak Fung (1918-2009).

Tai Tam Obelisks (was "Monument near Shek Ko Road")

If one looks towards Shek Ko Road from Redhill, you can see a monument on a wooded hillside overlooking the reservoir.

Does anyone know what it is and its history?

How to draw your own maps

[5 Jan 2014 UPDATE: This feature isn't working at present. I plan to get it working again after the upgrade is complete.]

It's easy to add a map to your text, and often more effective than trying to describe where something is. eg let's say I want to show the area of the old Army site in Admiralty. Here's the map:

It took under 2 minutes to make, here's how:

This is the latest Jurors List we're making searchable - here's how to join in, it'll only take around 20-30 minutes of your time.

The job is to take the previous year's list, then work through it page-by-page and edit in any changes so it matches this year's list.

Step 1. Check the comments below to see which was the last page someone has started typing. You'll work on the next page. eg if the last comment is 'started page 312', you'll be working on page 313.

[Found what you were looking for? If yes, please could you leave a comment below and tell us about your search? We're interested to learn more about the people and companies in these lists. Thanks, David]

This Jurors List was published in the Hongkong Government Gazette on 23rd Feb, 1898. A copy of the original document is available online at HKGRO: (If you just see a 'Hong Kong Government Reports Online' screen, please click the link again. For some reason the first click doesn't always work, but the second one does.)

The Missing History of Hong Kong Police Between 1841-1941

I have been told that as a result of the invasion and occupation of Hong Kong during World War II, almost all original records and correspondence of the Hong Kong Police were lost.  Most people suspected that they were deliberately destroyed prior to and during the invasion, or being shipped to Japan.

Sir Murray Maclehose and the end of fragrant grease

The time has come to consider the era of Hong Kong’s longest-serving, and, by general consent, greatest, Governor – Jock the Sock, aka Sir Murray MacLehose, aka Lord MacLehose of Beoch, 1971-82.

Unlike earlier Governors he is not commemorated by a road, a pier or a fireboat. He’s got a country walk named after him – the 100 kilometre long MacLehose Trail – but he’s in absolutely no danger of being forgotten.
