Sailors & Soldiers Home in Wanchai

Hi,

I remember there used to be a Sailors & Soldiers Home on Hennessy Road, Wanchai close to Fenwick Street.  However it has not shown up in any old photos I came across on this site.  Does anyone know its history, have any photos and know when it was demolished?

Thanks, CL

More Sixties Stuff

The Governor from 64 to 71 was David Trench:

His political views can be deduced from this photograph, although he was not the man who dealt with the 67 Riots - that was Ronald Holmes - see above.

yung yung bee shui (I try to translate it to English)

Hi David, how are you doing?  I try to look for a place called 'yung yung bee shui' in Cantonese.  I try to translate it to English as best as I can.  Do you have any idea where it is today.  My mom told me that this old building still exists.  Would you mind sedding some light?  Greatly appreciate your help.  Thanks again.  Mark.

North Kowloon Magistracy~Fleur de Lys decoration on staircase.

Can anyone shed light on the Fleur de Lys decorations on the staircase at North Kowloon Magistracy?

It may be that either the Architect, or a member of the Hong Kong Judiciary had an interest in this particular decoration, which has featured in Coats of Arms of both the British and French for centuries.

Thanks, Tony. <tcarroll@netvigator.com>

A note on "Fragrant grease"

Then there was the issue of corruption.

Towards the end of colonial rule, Hong Kong was squeaky clean, and there is a tendency on the part of the British to pat themselves on the back and congratulate themselves on the innate decency of the British Way of Life, with which we imbued the otherwise unenlightened Chinese in Hong Kong.

Hong Kong in the late Fifties and early Sixties

The Government of the People's Republic found some uses for Hong Kong even whilst the official embargo lasted; there were and are numerous front companies for mainland interests; everybody knew and knows who these are.

1941 - Southside named houses

Looking through the 1941 Jury List I found these named houses:

Repulse Bay

Enidville
Overbays - RBL 164
Homesdale

Two Bays, Deep Water BAy
Tara, Deep Water Bay
Zara, Deep Water Bay

Erinville, Tytam, Island Road

In other places I've found these names, but post war:

Tai Tam Road

The disappearing assistant

The number of Assistants on the Jurors Lists dropped from 479 to 265 over just two years. Did they all go to that great photocopier in the sky?
