Spam

Most Spam is just irritating. But sometimes I get stuff that is truly mind-boggling. Not for the outrageous claims, but for the fact that the sender seriously thinks they'll get some business out of it.

We've written about several old cable-car systems in Hong Kong. Which got this gentleman so excited he sensed a business opportunity:

Old sub-terrain public toilets?

Hi there,

It seemed a bit odd to have such a topic but indeed it was one of those totally unexpected during our meet-up over dinner.  Would you be more astonished if I tell you the topic was raised by the only lady present?    :-P

I could not recall anything like these on Kowloon side, but I have been peeing into at least three of them occasionally back in the 1970's.  They have one thing in common, ladies are not allowed.

HSBC Archives

HSBC runs an archive in Hong Kong. As you'd expect, most of their materials relate to the bank's business, but there are other ways they can help, including:

The Great Fire of Hong Kong

This is a guest post by Hong Kong writer and editor Adam Nebbs.

Great Fire of HK - Front
Collective Memory is a term used quite often in Hong Kong these days, amid the ongoing destruction of our city’s heritage. But several very significant events from our early history seem to have drifted into complete obscurity. The San Francisco Earthquake of 1906 is a well-known event in the United States, but how many Hongkongers are aware that just a few months later a typhoon devastated their own city, killing more than three times as many people? What was once known locally as The Great Fire of 1878 is another, similarly forgotten disaster.

Artlinks Asia - Collective Memory - Kong Kai Ming Sketches Exhibition

Hi there,

It's a bit late on this as the exhibition ends on 31st July.  Details could be found here.  I believe there are two exhibition sites and one of them is on 3/F of the Landmark, just outside Harvey Nichols and the ThreeSixty.

1956 riots

I've been trying to find some film or radio  commentary about/ during the 1956 riots (not 66 or  67).  I guess RTHK must have had some film as part of its news broadcasts. Does anyone have any, or know where they can be unearthed? Newspaper footage also of interest!

1896 Jurors List

[Found what you were looking for? If yes, please could you leave a comment below and tell us about your search? We're interested to learn more about the people and companies in these lists. Thanks, David]

This Jurors List was published in the Hongkong Government Gazette on 11th Feb, 1896. A copy of the original document is available online at HKGRO.

1897 pg119-131 started

This is the latest Jurors List we're making searchable - here's how to join in, it'll only take around 20-30 minutes of your time.

The job is to take the previous year's list, then work through it page-by-page and edit in any changes so it matches this year's list.

NB A small change: We'll follow a suggestion from Annelise, and use the page numbers that are printed on the original document. So in this case we'll be working on pages 119 - 131.
