Swire's Archives

A few resources if you're looking for information about relatives who worked in one of the Swire companies (Taikoo, Butterfield & Swire, etc):

Rob Jennings, Manager of Archives and Public Affairs at John Swire & Sons Ltd. may be able to help. Here's an example he told recently on the Swire Mariners Association Visitors Book:

JJ Cowperthwaite and the Hong Kong Economic Miracle

With the border closed and the entrepot trade dying, the question was asked - what was Hong Kong to do to feed and house all its refugees?

The British Government's solution was to consider handing Hong Kong back to China, just at the moment when Uncle Sam had stopped telling them to do that.

This is the latest Jurors List we're making searchable - here's how to join in, it'll only take around 20-30 minutes of your time.

Best Governor

In your opinion, which recent (starting from Grantham) HK British Governor contributed most to Hong Kong?  And why?

My vote is for MacLehose because of his establishment of ICAC to combat severe corruption and decay in our society at that time.

John Olson and Jurys

After a quicK look through the records, John Olson first appears as Manager of the Oriental Restaurant in the 1867 Jury List. I have scanned through the lists too fast but his last entry is in 1891 as Manager of the Stag Hotel. Between times he was Proprietor of the National Tavern. There is also mention of his brother Olof in the late 1870s as manager of the National.

So the question is why does he suddenly get dropped off in 1891 and yet lives on until 1918?
