The defence of Hong Kong

The Second World War was the grimmest episode in the history of Hong Kong.

That an attack from Japan was expected is something I can confirm because I have two good friends, both a decade older than me, one English and one Chinese, who were both born in Australia. They were the sons of, respectively, the Taipan and the Compradore of the Great and Ancient Hong, and their mothers, both pregnant, had been evacuated to Australia in the summer of 1941.

Fermented Beancurd

I would like to check if the following is true: During the Japanese occupation, British prisoners of war received fermented beancurd as substitute for cheese when their Chinese servants visited them in the camp.

The Thirties

From here on we move onto events that are within living memory, or which were recalled by people I have known.

In the Thirties, Hong Kong's run of good luck starts to come to an end...

The Great War did not affect Hong Kong but the Great Crash did; Hong Kong depends on trade and there was less of it about. At the same time, the Sino-Japanese War starts to wreck China's already feeble economy. Times started to look a bit grim.

Hong Kong in the Twenties

The rather unsatisfactory Stubbs was succeeded, from 1925 to 1930, by the very different Sir Cecil Clementi,

Rolex sign

When was the Rolex sign removed from the top of the building in Central?  Which building rooftop was it on?   It's sad because that display was so much part of HK just like the TST Railway Station Clock Tower, the Peak Tram, and the Star Ferry itself.

Kai Tak

The approach to Runway 13 at Kai Tak was said to have been one of the most difficult approaches in commercial aviation:

The aircraft descended on an initial heading of North-East. This took the plane over the harbour and then over west Kowloon. This part of the approach was done with an instrument guidance system. Passengers who had not been to HK before found this quite thrilling, as they got their first views of the place, but they were unprepared for what happened next...

A chapter on Society and Social Issues

I think we should now consider education, health and the social structure of Hong Kong in the early colonial era.

The Chinese citizens of Hong Kong differed from many of the other people under the British Colonial Wellington Boot in that they belonged to a very advanced civilisation, and were perfectly accustomed to education, medical treatment and so on.
