Letter Boxes on the Peak Tram Cars

Letter boxes were introduced on the tram cars operating to the Peak in November 1888 and they were discontinued in April 1897.

Does anybody have any photos of the interior of the tram cars showing such letter boxes ?

Trolly car towed behind trams

Back in the 1960s and 1970s, didn't trams on HK island tow a trolly car behind?  When did that practice discontinue and why?  As far as I could remember, there weren't any serious accidents occured when the trollys were in use, so I assume safety was NOT the issue. The trollys almost  increased the occupancy by more than 50% and helped ease the congestion tremendously.

More public transport..

Hong Kong does have honest-to-goodness regular trams; they were introduced in 1905 so it has had them for over a century. They are "classic" British-style double deckers, picking up power from overhead cables and able to be driven from either end. Like the Star Ferry, they are amazingly good value. (flat fare HK$2 for an adult, pensioners and brats half price).Folklore maintains that you can't tell the age of a Hong Kong tram because like the road sweepers broom they are forever getting rebuilt, to more or less the same basic design.

8mm film from the 50s - suggestions for a reputable hk lab anyone?

a friend of mine in hong kong has several canisters of 8mm film shot by her father in the 1950/60s.  it appears quite brittle and she is loathe to do it irreperable damage by handling it.  can anyone suggest a reliable local firm that could put this priceless footage on to a dvd (or other)  format?  also any idea of the likely cost?

any suggestions most welcome - thank you

Kulangsu Island

In Dr Scott's introduction to the island, he notes it "became notorious for heavy drinking, excessive gambling, wild nightlife and exotic bordellos." That makes a change from tunnels - off we went to explore!

Tunnels under Amoy

This was an unexpected bonus. A tunnel runs into the hill opposite our hotel, and leads to an underground theatre!

Here's what I saw as the taxi pulled up at the hotel:

ShaTin

I was astounded to see how much ShaTin has built up.  I remember going to ShaTin on a school field trip was such a big deal back in the 60s.  If someone can post some archives 1960s photos of ShaTin will be appreciated........especially areas surrounding the river/bay and the train station.

Old Amoy city

Today's Xiamen is a large Chinese city, covering most of the island. If you look at this 1945 map though, the old Amoy city was in the south-west corner of the island.

When was the border to mainland China closed after the revolution

Can anyone on this website tell me when the Border to Mainland China was closed.

Thanks

Looking For Dorothy Wong, Mid Level, 1970s

Since finding this site (accidentally, while trying to geo-position 1976 Hong Kong photos), I've enjoyed the volumes of fascinating, quality historic records.  The reminiscing set me on the path of trying to locate a girl I met during my (business/leisure) trip, in January '76.  I don't wish to intrude into her life but curiosity prompts me and I would welcome the opportunity to find that she's well and to have the opportunity to reminisce about my treasured memories of her courtesy to me while visiting her great city.
