Primary Schooling in the mid/late ‘50s

The account on schools in the ‘50s reminds me of my own experience in my first school, Nan Chiau 南僑學校, a private p.m. school that it shared with another school, St. John’s College, which ran the morning session.

The school was big, with its front entrance at Caine Road, Mid-Levels not far from Aberdeen Street. It had a back door at Seymour Road. The site was subsequently developed into the Cainway Mansion, still present today, I believe. We had around 50 or more kids in our class.

Can anyone make good use of an Epson V700 scanner?

I've just replaced my Epson V700 Photo scanner with the newer V800 model. The old one is still working, so if you can make good use of it please leave a comment below and I'll get in touch.

The good news:

  • It's free!
  • I've been using it until very recently - any of the detailed enlargements you've seen from me on Gwulo came from this scanner.

The bad news:

Valve indicators

I seem to recall a discussion several years ago about the house shaped marking painted onto some buildings' walls. However, I can't find the discussion now, so here is a new one. Apple Daily has the answers: https://hk.appledaily.com/us/20200816/2LVLXX2VCFB6TEXRWYSYI2KLKI/

List of American Internees in Stanley Camp

I found this document among my father's papers:

"Appendix 1: List of American Internees in Stanley Camp: Male & Female."

The National Archives (TNA) in a time of pandemic

The National Archives reopened about four weeks ago, but warned that numbers of users and facilities would be severely limited.  To this end they put in place an Eventbrite booking system - no charge, of course, but you had to be lucky - early - enough to get one of the tickets.  Only one per week was permitted.  Eventually, on 27th July I managed to book a slot - for 13th August. We were allowed only 6 documents or volumes, which had to be detailed with the booking, and the place was open from 10 to 2.50pm.  Only the first floor reading room would be open.

Looking for drawing of Central Market

Hi everyone,

I am carrying out a architectural study on the Old Central Market which was completed in 1895. I have been searching through the National Archives in the UK as well as the public record office in HK, but it seems that there are no relevant architectural drawings/design/record drawings (by the public works department or Tender Document/ Construction Drawing) of the building. Does anyone know any other possible places may hide those drawings in their chest and drawers?

Free Live Zoom Commentaries of Classic Hong Kong Movies

I will be doing a series of live Zoom commentaries on classic Hong Kong films. You see the film and me telling you all about the film, in the same frame. The first one is for the Jackie Chan flick 'Snake in the Eagle's Shadow'. What joy! Free to Gwulo members, so please send me your contact information to bey@reeleast.com. Thanks! - Bey

Photos of Hong Kong war gardens

Hi everyone,

I'm new to this site, and I have been looking for histrorical photos of gardens made in wartime in Hong Kong (and Asia more generally). I know in WW2, internees in Stanley prison created kitchen gardens to supplement food provisions, and I also heard there were gardens in the grounds of some schools during the war.

Adopted - Tracing Birth Mother

I am looking for my birth grandmother on behalf of my dad who was adopted early 1960.

I'm working with a pro-bono tracer on getting info. from the Red Cross (but it's taken years so far). All in all it's taken me the better half of a decade to obtain some non-identifying info. from the SWD but with HK governmental agencies not really operating at the moment, there's a hold-up with any progress and I'm getting a bit anxious. So I thought to give this forum a go as I've found the sleuthing here top notch.
