  • Last week's newsletter about the new book Crime, Justice and Punishment in Colonial Hong Kong had a good response. In the newsletter I thanked all the contributors who helped me searching for images. I'd also like to extend my thanks to The Hong Kong Jockey Club for sponsoring the book project, and to Hong Kong University Press for the high quality of the printed images.

Free Gwulo talk via Zoom this Saturday, 8th August

I'd originally planned to be in London this Saturday, presenting a talk in person to the Friends of the RAS Hong Kong Branch. Covid-19 put an end to those plans, but the talk is going ahead online, kindly hosted by the Royal Asiatic Society (RAS) here in Hong Kong. It's open to anyone around the world, just book as shown below.

Rail systems are located in Waglan Island, Green Island and Castle Peaks. These rails are still existing nowadays but the "cart" used on these rails are a myst. Do you guys have old photos or docs describe how it look???

Here is a short clip of Waglan's rail:

999 year leases - compilation

Hey all,

One of my friends told me about 999 year leases last year. I looked online but couldn't find much information- even my rental agent told me that they were rare and hard to find, and located only in mid-levels. So I spent the past month doing a lot of research and compiling a list of current buildings that sit on lots with 999 year leases, and it turns out there's quite a lot of them: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/999-year_leases_in_Hong_Kong

Thank you!

Where was 1 Park Road?

The current Park Road begins with number 25 on the odd number side of the road but 2A on the even number side. Does anyone know why? I know the late Mr Fung Ping Shan owned a house at 1 Park Road and am interested to find out its location.

  • We had several interesting replies to last week's photo of the sewing lady, adding more photos of similar scenes and confirming the location was Wyndham Street.
  • Nona has uploaded two examples of the documents sent to thank uninterned members of the public who helped POWs and internees during the war:
    • letter.jpg
    • lettertomom.jpg
  • Alfred has uploaded a rare set of maps, drawn by his father Charlie LEUNG Chung-Yee in August 1945. Charlie was a skilled draughtsman, working for the BAAG. I've included one example below, then here's the link to the index and all 14 detailed maps.

Stumbled on what looks like a Japanese tunnel off the trail east of the Twins near Stanley yesterday.
