Photo of 12A Humphreys Building, Kowloon

Hello there:

I have discovered where my great aunt and uncle Sally and Gordon Castle lived pre-Stanley. They lived at 12A Humphreys Buiilding, Kowloon. I have looked but can't find an archival photo of what the building looked like in the 1930s. Does anyone know of an old photo of this building?

Thanks very much.

Marrying from the Italian Convent

A subject, which may have been covered elsewhere, as it is a part of Hong Kong’s social history, is the question of how to find a suitable European bride in the late nineteenth and early twentieth century. For young bachelors in the lower strata of European society the pool of well brought up girls was very small. But there did exist a pool of very well brought up European and Eurasian girls, who had had very little exposure to the wider world.

Gwulo forever: backups and archives

This website holds a lot of valuable information, representing tens of thousands of hours of work. To recreate it would take literally years, and in some cases the information is irreplaceable as the original contributors have already passed away.

As a website is a surprisingly fragile thing, this newsletter looks at some of the steps that are in place to keep the Gwulo's information available for the long term.

1. Backups: Coping with short-term damage

The Gwulo website has already broken down several times over the 10+ years since we started due to problems with the server, me making a mistake, or attacks by hackers.

The solution is to

Gwulo's 2017 Top Ten

A look at the most popular pages that appeared on Gwulo in 2017.

#10 - UA-Citygate Cinema / UA 東薈城戲院 [2000-2016] (6,729 views)

This is a modern cinema, so you might be surprised to see its page on Gwulo, and in the top ten! The page is part of a larger project to document Hong Kong's cinemas (see #4 below), and I guess it attracted web searchers looking for information after the cinema was closed.

query about squatter occupancy survey

Hello all

I am following up on my past research on Hong Kong squatter areas, and a key issue for me that I am hoping to find more information about is the Squatter Occupancy Survey conducted in 1984.  Previously, only squatter structures were registered, but in 1984 all occupants of squatter structures at that time were registered, with the intention that only they would be eligible for resettlement in permanent public housing through clearance.
