Primary School on Minden Ave. for British armed forces children

In the 1950s there was a primary school at Minden Ave, Kowloon, behind Mody Road. Can anyone comment on the site or anyone actually attended that school?

When: In previous views like this we've looked at the ships in the harbour or the buildings in the foreground to pin down the photo's date. As this is a very sharp photo I'm going to look across the harbour to the Hung Hom peninsula for clues instead.

For most of the 20th century the peninsula was

2020-03-10 Gwulo website crashed

Shortly after waking up this morning I checked email and found a long list of alert emails, telling me the website had stopped working at about 5:30am Hong Kong time.

The hosting company's help desk were unable to repair the problem (a corrupt database), so instead I've asked them to restore a backup copy that was made yesterday.

The good news is that the website is up and running again.

Annual submission date of names and addresses in Hong Kong

Do we know by which date names and addresses had to be submitted for publication in the Jurors Lists and the Ladies Directories and who to? It would be useful to know how and when this was done in order to track people's movements more precisely.

HK Police Magazine 1956

Whilst trying to locate an old friend who used to be in the Marine Police (without success) I happened to come across a resource which I want to share with HK Police enthusiasts.

It seems that copies of the HK Police Magazine which must have been printed and circulated in 1956 have been digitized and kept by HKU.

Gwulo talk in London on 28th March is postponed

We've postponed my talk to the Friends of the RASHKB that was planned for 28th March. Rather than run the risk of bringing along any unwanted viral visitors I've decided to cancel my visit to the UK. We've tentatively rescheduled the talk to early August, and will confirm nearer the day.

I'm sorry for the inconvenience - hopefully I'll get to see Gwulo's UK readers in August.

1.1.1 Updated PHP to version 7.3

I've updated Gwulo's web server to version 7.3 of PHP, as it makes the website run faster than it did on the older version of PHP

A few parts of the website stopped working, as is usually the case after an update like this. I've fixed all the problems I can see, but if you notice strange behaviour on any pages, please leave a comment below with a link to that page and a description of the problem.

Dear Gwulo,

Request for help to identify Chinese dragon boat artefact found in NSW

Dear list members

I am writing to ask for your help to identify a Chinese artefact that was found at the port of Merimbula in southern NSW during my thesis on the coastal shipping industry, which may have been brought from Hong Kong by immigrants to Australia in the 19th century during the gold rushes.
