Hong Kong Gov Reports Online

I've been having problems getting this to load in the last 24 hours ... and a few months ago all I could get was an error message.  Each time I've emailed the webmaster (webmaster@lib.hku.hk) and a wonderful person there has got it up and running again within 5 minutes!   We (ok, I ) moan and groan about access to material in HK ... so I have to shout about it a bit when things work this well!  I've had a follow up email saying that the new server has had some issues but they are working on it.  Indeed they are.

1977 Aerial views from the Flying Doctor

Kung Hei Fat Choy! We start the New Year with a guest post from Michael Powell, who takes us on a helicopter trip from Kai Tak over Kowloon to the New Territories:

It's Christmas Eve 1977 and the Royal Hong Kong Auxiliary Airforce Helicopter HKG 2 is taxiing from RAF Kai Tak prior to take off at Kai Tak Airport. We are on our way to the east side of The New Territories to visit some of the remotest villages to give medical assistance where required.

Airborne, we can look down at Kai Tak.

Then we head approximately north over Kowloon City. Dead centre is a white block of flats with redish stripes along its length. That was Block 5, Sunderland Road, RAF Married Quarters and where I lived. Below the block of flats is Kowloon Tsai Park, and just to the right is

Upcoming Gwulo Talks

Both of the following talks are open to the public, so it'll be great if you can join us.

Hong Kong, 8 February (Saturday morning) - I'll present talk #3 to the RAS - think of it as the live version of the latest Gwulo book, Volume 3. Details and booking.

London, 28 March (Saturday afternoon) - I'll present talk #5 to the Friends of the RASHKB. This is my newest talk, and this will be the first time I've presented it in the UK. Details will follow in a future newsletter.

Tracking down a Centurion

My Grandfather Malcolm Sandison was part of C Squadron in the 17th/21st Royal Lancers in the mid-late 1950’s based in Germany. He was the driver of a Centurion Mk3 later converted to a Mk5, registration 02ZR72.

Squatters in Hong Kong - lecture this Sunday

https://www.uchicago.hk/events/on-the-verge-of-metropolis-squatters-in-h...

I'm hoping to go to this ... or rather I was, but I notice that at least half of it is in Cantonese.  As a non-speaker, does anyone have any idea if such talks come with any translation usually ... ?

Thanks!

Road Between Mody and Middle Road in 1958

If I had been able to find a map of Tsim Sha Tsui in the late fifties I would have found my answer without bothering other readers.

On the east side of Nathan Road between Middle and Mody Roads  there was a very short cul-de-sac leading to a group of shops and Henry's Cafe, laid out in a circle. I have been straining my memory for the name of this street. Can nayone helo me? I think the whole area was redevoped in 1958/59 together with the Melbourne Hotel.

May Road - origin of name

I've been asked recently about May Road.  I'd assumed that it was named after FH May, Governor 1912-19 ... and at https://gwulo.com/atom/23602 Gen Suzuki gives us the Wikipedia entry for it which say so.

But ... it was started in 1907 and the person who signed the announcement of its naming in the Government Gazette was none other than then Colonial Secretary F H May - see  http://sunzi.lib.hku.hk/hkgro/view/g1907/6398.pdf

D F Davies's report on the escape from Shamshuipo POW Camp in Jan 1942

REPORT ON AN ESCAPE FROM SHUM SHUI PO (KOWLOON) , HONG KONG PRISONERS' OF WAR CAMP, MADE ON 9th JANUARY, 1942.

The camp was actually the NANKING and HANKOW Barracks, KOWLOON, which were believed to be evacuated at the outset of the Japanese war.

Our Party consisted of:-

Jan 1942 - L T Ride's escape from Japanese-held Hong Kong

78 years ago, four escapees from the Sham Shui Po Prisoner-Of-War camp were cautiously making their way north through the New Territories, hoping to get through Japanese lines to reach Free China. The group was led by Lieut-Colonel L. T. RIDE, and this is his report of the escape.

4. REPORT ON ESCAPE FROM P.O.W. CAMP, SHAMSHUIPO, HONGKONG by L. T. RIDE (Late Lieut-Colonel H.K.V.D.C.)

1. ESCAPE PARTY PERSONNEL.

  • L. T. RIDE,          Lieut-Colonel,   C.O. H.K. Field Ambulance
  • D. W. MORLEY,  Lieut (E),           H.K.R.N.V.R.
  • D. F. DAVIES,     Sub-Lieut,         H.K.R.N.V.R.
  • Y. P. LEE,            L/Cpl.,               H.K.V.D.C. Field Ambulance

2. PRELIMINARIES.

No advantage of escaping was taken of the chaos which existed immediately after the surrender, for it was hoped that in my capacity as OC Field Ambulance I would obtain permission from the Japanese to search the hills for the wounded which we knew must still be lying there in numbers.

On the 28th December after three days of futile endeavour, I was given the final official reply:

Pictures of 7th Queens Hussars 1958 wanted
