Submitted by brian edgar on Tue, 2012-01-31 00:41Book / Document:Date(s) of events described:Thu, 19 Feb 1942The Temporary Commitee had planned to end its activities today, but three extraordinary meetings were necessitated by the attempt of the Chinese Camp Supervisor, Mr. Cheng, apparently in collusion with some elements of the Japanese authorities, to force the internees to pay for their fish and vegetables and for the accommodation in the brothel-hotels during January.
After vigorous protests had failed to have any effect, the threat of cutting off all rations forced the internees to pay the money demanded. The cheque was returned uncashed after Mr. Cheng had left his post.
