Probably this pillar box was  No. 36 which is kept in the British Postal Museum as seen here

Don't recall having seen a George V or VI with such high numbering.

I'm not so sure. The one in the museum pictures has a different collection plate aperture with a bar across the middle. The one above doesn't.

Thanks. Can't explain that. Just going by numbers.

Normally when a postbox is replaced, it retains the same box number. In the case of Box 366, the current postbox number is on Container Port Road, Kwai Chung. I don't think a George V or VI postbox would have been erected there at the time.

Hello,

Would retired postboxes be put back into service at a different location?  Or perhaps some renumbering happened at some point?

There are some postboxes with the George V cipher with numbers in the 200s and even 400s: http://gwulo.com/node/4523

I suspect retired postboxes which are no longer of use would be disposed of. Since the handover from what I have noticed is that the postbox numbering has not changed.

Thanks Phil and C. Found a photo of Postbox No. 366 here and here after being "posted" abroad.
