Hong Kong Riding (Jockey?) Club c1937

Hong Kong Riding (Jockey?) Club c1937

Members of the Hong Kong Riding (Jockey?) Club sometime before the war - perhaps about 1935-1939?

In the 2nd row down, 5th and 6th from right, are Ron Brooks and Helene Caudron (before their marriage in 1939).  They met at the Club when - according to the story - Ron gave Helene a hand to mount her horse!

Ron had been a member of the Club for many years and had been a jockey in his teens.  During the time he met Helene he was an officer in the Merchant Navy but  shortly before his marriage, and the war,  he left the sea to join his father in the HK Fire Brigade. His father (Henry Brooks) was the Chief Officer.

Helene leant to be a competent horse woman and Took part in dressage, horse jumping and "the hunt".  Ron also played polo. The Riding Club was a big part of their lives and very much the social scene for young Europeans. It was at the annual Ball that Ron proposed to Helene.

DOES ANYONE RECOGNIZE ANYONE IN THE PHOTO?

AND DOES ANYONE RECOGNIZE WHERE THIS IS?

I wonder if this is the same as the Fanling Hunt group (see http://gwulo.com/search/node/%22fanling%20hunt%22), or a different club?

Hi David

I have been wondering that myself, though I cannot recall  my parents referring to it as such. They mostly said at "the Jockey Club".
