Mystery Door

Mystery Door
Authors:

This door is in my parents-in-law's house in Essen/Germany. The house was built in 1963. One day during construction my father-in-law arrived with the door (or the glass, to be precise) and told his family, that he had "found" it. He never wanted to give details, and I can't ask him again because he died some years ago.

A friend translated the chinese words to read "Hong Kong Store".

I wouldn't have posted it, but last week I read in our local newspaper something about the Roman-Chatholic diocese Hong Kong. 55 years ago (= 1961) they started a partnership with the diocese of Essen. My father-in-law was an architect and worked for the bishop of Essen. So it could have been that this door was sent from Hong Kong to Essen, and there was no use for it - until my father-in-law saw it.

This connection might be nonsense, but it's a nice story.

That's an interesting mystery! It must be a good conversation starter when people visit the house for the first time.
