One of several ships used in the transport of British troops in the days when flights were usually prohibitively expensive.  Some were ex German liners that had been confiscated in 1945. Only when the movement of personnel was really urgent did the Air Ministry fork out for them to be flown either by Air Transport Command, or one of the independent charter firms such as Airwork, or in a few cases by B.O.A.C.
