According to the Wikipedia, white diagonal on red cross: [1707-1801] The Blue Ensign with the first version of the Union Jack.  My guess is that the British East India Company used it for promote trade with China.  Regards,  Peter

A much maligned design, originally dates to 1842, athough I am not sure which version the above is meant to be
