HRH the Duke of Edinburgh visited Hong Kong in 1869 this photograph was captured by John Thompson. The HMS Galatea is seen at anchor off Pedders Wharf. Ships of many nations adorned with decorations, long lines of merchant boats guarded the approach to the wharf for the Duke's landing. The floating population at this time was numbered at least 30,000 souls
