1956-10-10 marked the national day of the Republic of China (ROC) which ruled the mainland China until they fleed to Taiwan in 1949 after being defeated by the Chinese Communists. They exerted a lot of influence in Hong Kong at that time. The riot was supposed to be caused by the police taking down of a flag of the ROC.
