The background is HK island so I think those buildings are all HK side. This looks like it was taken east island area looking west.

Considering the year, perhaps taken at Causeway Bay looking at East Point  and central and western end of Hong Kong Island.

It looks like it was taken on the road between the Tin Hau temple in modern day Tin Hau and the Joss House in Tai Hang. Not sure what else was out this way in the 1870s-80s. A couple of similar views:
