Cover of photo album
Hi David.
This photo is identical to the one on the cover of my husband's photo album. I wonder if Fred and my husband bought their albums from the same place? Perhaps someone had a good little business selling photo albums to national servicemen!!
Pauline.
Re: Cover of photo album
Hi Pauline,
It was more than just photo albums, they also had a good business selling photos. At first you'd think that would mean selling them photos of the sights, but there's one photo of Fred where he's looking at photos of themselves that had been taken by a local photographer. I think the photos were of them in camp, or on exercises - doesn't sound like spies would have had a hard time!
I've also got some photos of a group of soldiers in the 1900s, taken by a local photographer, and also quite casually done. It does sound like that was a steady part of a local photographer's business, at least until cameras became cheap enough that most soldiers would have their own.

photos and photographers
Hi David,
Sounds as though HK must have been full of entrepreneurs who would have seized any opportunity to make a quick buck! Good for them. I have a photo of my husband with his camera but can't make out what sort it is, I know he bought a superb Leica while he was in HK, which I still have, but I don't think he took the photos that I have with that so he probably took a camera out with him. Not much chance of the local photographers taking a photo of him where he worked I suspect!!
Thanks for the replies and the help with everything.
Best regards, Pauline.
