Unknown estate under construction, 1965

Hi all, my first post here. Can anyone identify where this photo was taken?

It was uploaded by H. Grobe to the Wikimedia Commons under a free licence with no information attached other than the date, 1965. I've been trying to add the location, but I'm stumped!

I have poked around numerous locations on Google Earth including Aberdeen, Wah Fu/Cyberport, Tuen Mun, island east, Tsing Yi, Sai Kung...but nothing stands out in particular. Made more difficult by the reclamation and the fact that these buildings have likely been redeveloped.

Possible starting point: which islands are those in the background?

Thanks for any help,

Citobun

May be Chai Wan with RAF Little Sai Wan behind.

Hi there,

I agree it is very likely Chai Wan for these reasons:

1.    There are quite a few radio towers in the background.  Couldn't think of anything other than Siu Sai Wan;

2.    I still have a 1975 map of Hong Kong Island and the seawall with those boats in the photo exist in the map, so did the public estate;

3.    The two small islands seem to add up as well.  The very small one on the left hand stide still exist, but the bigger island had already been linked up with the peninsula.  The bigger one seem to be cann Tit Cham Chau (鐵琴洲).  I will try to find the name of the smaller island later;

Thanks & Best Regards,

T

Thank you both for your efforts! Chai Wan seems to be correct!

I have looked online and these buildings seem to be part of the old Chai Wan Estate. Here's a few later photos: 19701976, early 80s

Hi there,

The Public Estate in the photo should be the previous incarntation of Chai Wan Estate (柴灣邨)  The Estate started out in 1957 and was fully developed in 1966.

The current Chia Wan Estated was built in 2010.

Thanks & Best Regards,

T

Hi there,

Made a typo.   The Chinese characters should be 鐵參洲 instead.

Thanks & Best Regards,

The photo is same as this one in the wiki entry for 柴灣邨
