This was likely Chinese opera
This was likely Chinese opera. Those big oval shaped billboards were sponsored by various shops congratulating particular actors and/or actresses. No doubt in those days having more and bigger billboards with your name plastered across it counted for a lot in terms of limelight on any actor/actress. In this photo many big household names back in those days were mentioned on those boards.
I searched the Hong Kong Film Archive (HKFA) and found no record that matched part of the name of the show shown on the bottom right of the photo. This I surmise must be a live opera show instead of a filmed version and shown in cinemas, because otherwise the HKFA will have a record (and probably a recording) of it.

Re Cantonese Opera event
Hi there,
It should be a Cantonese Opera event. This being I recognized one of the name of some of the stars. 任冰兒, 林家聲,歐陽儉, 秦少梨 and 梁少平. Can't make out the location though.
Thanks & Best Regards,
T
