Accounts of the burning and sinking of the Queen Elizabeth always make it sound like C.Y. Tung's vision of the Seawise University went to the bottom along with the burnt-out hulk of the QE II.
Fortunately, these accounts are wrong. C.Y. Tung got himself another ship, and Seawise University was off and running. It eventually morphed into the Semester at Sea program, partnered with the University of Pittsburgh.
I first came to Hong Kong in 1986 as a undergraduate student in this program when my Semester at Sea ship, the SS Universe, berthed at Ocean Terminal in TST. I have been coming back to Hong Kong ever since, and I am also a proud alum of Semester at Sea and deeply grateful to C.Y. Tung.
Today Seawise University/Semester at Sea has evolved into the Institute for Shipboard Education, which is partnered with the University of Virginia. Check out their website at www.semesteratsea.org. They have a fancy new ship, and it still turns up in Hong Kong!
