Added Place for the ferry pier.

Looks like the photo may have been taken from the lower deck of a car ferry.

Cannot think what my husband would have been doing on a car ferry although I guess they probably took foot passengers as well as cars but thanks for the thought,  I had wondered where this was taken from with only water in the foreground.

Hi there,

For this particular ferry service, the ferriers are double-deckers where vehicles are on lower deck and passengers are on upper decks.  If you pay attention to the photo you should be able to see the main gangway for vehicles in the middle of the pier, and a passenger platform by the right, running perpendicular to the ferry.

When the ferry is secured the passenger gangway would be lower onto the platform for the upper deck.  There was another pier of similar design on the island side of the harbour, Central.

This photo captured from the film 'Love is a many-splendored thing' which is also on this site, gives you a glimsp of the passenger platform on the Central side that I was talking about.  It's the draw-bridge look alike thing right there.

Best Regards,

T

Many thanks T,  I enjoy seeing the clips from 'Love is a many-splendored thing'  as my husband remained in HK until the end of 1955 so he must have been there while the filming was going on.  I follow what you mean about the ferry.

 Best Regards,  Pauline.
