Newspaper headlines are even better clues than the cinema advert in the previous photo.

This board stood outside the offices of The China Mail newspaper, on the corner of Wyndham Street and Wellington Street. The headline 'Master Of Compromise' appeared in the issue published on Saturday, 18 August 1928, and gives us the exact date the photo was taken!

Sunshine Susie

The poster advertises ‘Sunshine Susie’, a movie showing at the Tai Ping Theatre over in Shek Tong Tsui. This British musical was released in 1931, dating the main photo of Queen's Road Central to the early 1930s.

1896 Brick carrier

Bricks were delivered to the seafront by boat, then carried inland by men using shoulder-poles and these carriers.

Buried treasure!

The house on the hilltop in this c.1929 photo was demolished by the Japanese during their occupation of Hong Kong in the 1940s. They buried a valuable historic relic at the site, and it is believed to still be there today!
