There's some confusion over the spelling of his name. Eric MacNider spells it "Brenchley" on several pages of his diary, so that's the version I'll use. But there's also:

  • "A G Benchley, b. 1892, Merchant" in John Black's list, and
  • "Brengchley, A.G. Mr. Food Control, Gloucester Hotel NKH" on the Hong Kong War Diary website 

(I checked the 1939 Jurors' List and Blue Book, but couldn't find any matching name.)

Dr. Nicolson (sometimes called Nicholson in wartime sources) qualified in 1924 at Glasgow University and was registered to practie in Hong Kong in 1925, eventually becoming Port doctor.

He remained outside Stanley in 1942 to help Selwyn-Clarke with his public health work in occupied Hong Kong. He was interned on May 7, 1943 in the wake of the latter's arrest.

At some point after the war he emigrated to the USA, living in Sacramento, California.

Dr. Mackie was appointed a Hong Kong Medical Officer in 1930.

He stayed out of Stanley to help Selwyn-Clarke with his public health work in occupied Hong Kong, but was interned on May 7, 1943 in the wake of the latter's arrest.

He was a malariologist, who continued the camp's campaign against that disease.
