Crashes at Kai Tak were not uncommon in the 1950s. Piston engined planes were generally not as reliable as turbo props and jets and the runways in use before the one extending into the harbour was built were notoriously difficult ones for pilots. When Andrew Suddaby arrived by B.O.A.C. Argonaut the pilot made the comforting (?) announcement that Kai Tak was the most exciting and trickiest airport he knew. <Read more ...>

Jim flew from the UK to Hong Kong by R.A.F. Transport Command in a Hastings aircraft. This was the military version of the Hermes plane flown by B.O.A.C.. The Hastings seemed to suffer from more than their fair share of mechanical problems. <Read more ...>
