1950s "A suburb view in Hong Kong"

1950s "A suburb view in Hong Kong"

When: This comes from the same set as the recent photo of the YMCA and the Peninsula Hotel in TST, and should be taken around the same time in the 1950s. There's a personal connection between the two photos, which we'll look at in the "Who:" below.

What: Over at the right of the photo, there looks to be a "San Miguel" sign on the

Luk Chau Tsuen, Lamma - Abandoned House

I'm a journalist working on a story involving abandoned homes and am appealing for information on a house on Lamma.

The aforementioned property is a dilapidated family home in Luk Chau Tsuen, Lamma (on mainland Lamma, not the isle of the same name off the coast).

Photos of the house:

A considerable fire occurred on January 10th at Ap Liu, near Sham Shui Po, numerous sheds and huts belonging to and occupied by the villagers being destroyed.

Three houses on Inland Lot 17, Aplichau, were partly destroyed on October 30th and are being re-instated.

Several other fires occurred in the Colony, but none were of large dimensions.

Best wishes to you and your family in the year of the rooster.

Trademark - "Cock Brand"

This rooster comes from a 1930s application to register it as a trademark. He was to be used "in respect of Raisins, rolled oats, canned sardines, canned abalone and pearl barley". Quite a versatile fellow!

I like looking at the old trademark designs. Some are simple but effective, like this design for

oil products delivered to anti-japanese resistance

Hello.

I am curious as to whether you have heard or read anything about Western  oil
distribution companies such as Socony Vacuum Co. delivering oil products from Hong Kong to
the Chinese resistance to the Japanese occupation in South China ?
This would be around 1939 to 1941, December.

Hong Kong Preliminary Planning Report, 1948

This report was written by Patrick Abercrombie and was published in 1949. He spent 34 days in HK in the last two months in 1947. The advnaced draft copy was delivered in September 1948 before his heading to Australia. Need more background info of this plan such as information about who were the local professionals assisting him like SO Hill, the Town Planning Officer in the PWD.

Where: This is the view across Salisbury Road in Tsim Sha Tsui, looking at the YMCA [1] and the Peninsula Hotel [2]. They've been neighbours for ninety years.

When: The photo comes from a small set that was sold to tourists. Looking at some of the other photos in the set, they were taken in the early- to mid-1950s.

What: The YMCA is the older of the two buildings:

Municipal Wastes Incinerators in Hong Kong

Introduction

Municipal wastes were dumped in specially designed areas (tips) over decades. Due to high prices and low availability of land the Government of Hong Kong decided by the end of the 1950’s to investigate the building of municipal waste incinerators. At that time it became evident that the further lifetime of the main tip at Gin Drinkers Bay was limited.
