Union Church

A recent RAS talk by Dr Brooke Himsworth covered the history of Union Church. It's currently on Kennedy Road, but he explained this is the fourth church building already. It has moved twice, and disappeared once in its 150+ year history.

The church was founded by James Legge, an active man in Hong Kong's early history. The first church was built on Hollywood road around 1844/5.

Next they moved to Staunton Street, opening a more substantial church there in 1865.

Grandeurs and Mysteries

The recently added photo of Astor House was bought as part of an advertisement. When it arrived, it was clearly a page cut from a book, so we got a bonus of some more text and photos on the other side of the page. They are all listed below.

I guess the book was something like the 'Lonely Planet Guide to Asia' if you were leaving home in 1909. It must have been a weight to carry though, as this is page 257.

Pubs and hotels in Old Hong Kong

I wonder if anybody has information about pubs and hotels in the early days of HK.

My great grandfather, John Olson, arrived in Hk from Sweden around 1860 and was involved in The National Tavern - he held the liquor licence for it - at 292 Queens Road West and was also manager of the Oriental Restaurant. This property seems to have morphed into the National or Nationals Hotel which I think he was the proprietor of.

Google News Archive

Google has added a very cool function - allowing you to search scanned newspapers over the past century or so. the best feature is the timeline, showing the frequency of stories about the search terms, plus you can narrow it down to free archives.

Gwulo sells out

You'll have noticed that Tuesday's photo is a bit different from the usual. But what won't have been obvious is that it's a first step towards selling old photos on Gwulo.com. Here's the story so far....

The Hong Kong Heritage Project

The Hong Kong Heritage Project (HKHP) was established in 2007 by Sir Michael Kadoorie with the mandate of safe-guarding the history of Kadoorie businesses, both past and present. Since then, HKHP has develo

Archives & Collections

In an ideal world, everything would be digitised and available through our web browser. In practice, many documents are still only visible in their original, hard-copy form. If you want to see them, you'll have to make a trip to the archive.

Hare are physical archives I know of that contain information related to Hong Kong. Please leave a comment below if you can add any more.

What is the object in this photo and what is its function?

I went for a tour of the old buildings in Tai Hang, Causeway Bay, and on the corner of Omsley Road and College Street (at the back of No 3, 4 School Street) I saw the object in this photo.  Does anyone know what it is / was for?

Also, how does one read the marking on these "house" shaped signs?

Gwulo's page layout messed up

James Kong reported this problem:

BTW your page is merging the left-column with second column stuff.  Using Windows, could that be the problem?

One other person reported this by email, but wasn't able to describe their computer setup.

If you see this problem, please could you leave a comment below to let me know:
