Life in Hong Kong's ARP tunnels

If you lived in Hong Kong in the 1940s or 1950s, or you know someone that did, we’re keen to hear of any stories about Hong Kong’s Air Raid Precaution (ARP) tunnels. The government reports tell us the location, size, geology, etc, but there is very little written about what conditions were like for the people that had to use the tunnels in wartime.

Here are the few references to the tunnels that I’ve found:

A guided walk around Mount Davis

This walk is one of my favourites. On the map there doesn't seem to be much to see, but on the ground there's all sorts - Bruce Lee's ancestors, 1950's squatter villages, and even a so-called ‘concentration camp’. The walk takes you out of the built-up areas too, so it makes a pleasant break if you’re starting to find Hong Kong a bit claustrophobic.

Island School

Are the old Island School yearly magazine online anywhere?

Photos of old Hong Kong

Here we bring together the photos of old Hong Kong that are hosted on Gwulo, plus links to other collections.

Hong Kong Photos, 1946-7

There are well over 100 photos from this period at the Hedda Morrison website, and each photo has an interesting snippet of history attached. Well worth a visit. MrB

Victoria City, Hong Kong

Have you ever written your address like that? Probably not, but if you live on Hong Kong island there's a good chance your address lies within the 'City of Victoria'. Here's a map showing the city boundary, as laid out in Solomon Bard's book 'In search of the past: A guide to the antiquities of Hong Kong':

Subterranean Star Street

If you live or work around Star Street, Wanchai, I guess the tunnel you're most interested in is the new one that will link Pacific Place 3 to the Admiralty MTR. But did you know you're also next to one of the old wartime tunnel networks, built as air-raid shelters for the public to use during the second world war?

Learning Chinese underground

Next time you’re on the MTR, how about learning Chinese characters from the route map? Ok, learning to read and write Chinese needs several years’ full-time study, but if you can spare a few minutes at least we can give you a good idea of how the characters came about.

Mount Parish history

How did Mount Parish get its name? Originally I thought it was from some connection with the Methodist church on the corner of Queen's Rd E and Kennedy Road. But it turned out the church came after the Parish, not the other way around.

Tunnels under Mount Parish

Have you ever heard of 'Mount Parish' in Hong Kong? The name has fallen out of common use, but the hill is still there, together with its extensive tunnel network and place in Hong Kong's wartime history.

The hill lies on the boundary between Wanchai and Happy Valley, with Kennedy Road on its West, Queen's Road East on the North, and Stubbs Road to the East.
