Hi there,

This gun had been terrorizing Causeway Bay for quite a while.  I still remember all those kids in Causeway Bay, especially those living around the present day site of World Trade Centre/Excelsior Hotel, tend to jump when this blasted gun sound its signal.

I was one of those kids.  It had been very loud indeed until the present day gun was swapped.  It is still very lound if you are standing beside it, but not that loud for the neighbourhood.

Best Regards,

T

Noon Day Gun
George Bush firing the Noon Day Gun 1978

Hi there,

From the expression of some of the guests it is really very loud.

Best Regards,

The gun in the original photograph was used as the "Noon Day Gun" from August 1947 until May 1961. A good read here of the firing of the Gun and its history. Interesting to note the cannons seen next to the Gun at the firing site were unearthed from East Point Godowns after the Japanese Occupation and date back to about 1840. China Mail 6 August 1958 refers.
