The Bowrington Canal Air Raid Pen-Shelters were built of hollow concrete blocks, making them blast proof and splinter proof against any high explosive bomb exploding not nearer than 50 feet away.
The roofs were reinforced to provide protection against machine-gunning and had two supporting pillars in the centre of the shelter to prevent them from caving in.
