That must be one of the last photos taken of the building before it was bombed during the Japanese occupation.

I realise that if you go to the source of this photo you see it is part of Harrison Forman's photos on HK but I was surprised that you did not mention that fact.  The other surprise is that it seems that he did not take the actual photo as he is the photographer in the photo!  Maybe he had a delayed action camera on a tripod which took the photo!  Did they have them in 1940?

Good point about the delayed action. I'd guess he was out with other photographers and just handed his camera to one of them, but I'm not sure.
