Chinese New year mural on front of Chartered Bank. Chartered Bank was one of several note issuing banks in HK. This was a frenetic time of the year for banks as customers drew out large amounts to put into red packets. After Chinese new year, the money flowed back in. Probably, most people in HK would have been unaware that the issue of Bank notes was fully covered by deposits of HK Dollars with the HK Monetary Agency.
