Bamboo theatres were common in the 1900s built typically to serve at short-term events.  In the 1950s, one was built at the Mape Street Playground, for example, to celebrate Chinese New Year and show Cantonese opera.  Some of the early "open-air" movie theatres likely were also built with bamboo.
