Hi There,

This should be the Lee Theatre at Percival Street and Sharp Street East.  If you pay attention you shoudl be able to see supporting wire for the electrical cables of the tram line.

Hi Tngan, thank you for that prompt answer,60 yrs,and I have not known,so that puts the cinema in Victoria. But it’s only half the answer, ——what was the film called, ??

Hi There,

The Lee Theatre doubled as a Chinese Opera theatre.  What's on the photo showed one of the most famous Cantonese Opera Group 仙鳳鳴 (pronounced as Sin Fung Ming in Cantonese).  The Opera shown was 九天玄女, some mythical tales.

Hope the clips would not be too loud.

Hi Tngan, Well that does surprise me, have never been an opera fan, not that I can remember anyway, Have always blamed my military service on my hearing defect.[only joking] Will now research the Lee Theatre, must be/been much more than just a cinema to accommodate a national opera company. Thankyou

Hi There,

Back in thos days, the Lee Theatre was start of the art.  It was the first theatre equipped with a revolving stage.  On the other hand, the stage was very deep.  The audiance seatings were modelled after western Opera house of the time.

I remember it also hosted Pop-Rock Concerts there in the 1960-1970, as well as other activities.
