Causeway Bay

Causeway Bay

I'm not sure which part of the Aberdeen harbour this shows, but it's interesting to see just one yacht amongst all the sampans. In the late 1990s, when Bruce sent me copies of his photographs for the 367 Association's archive, he included  a list of locations and most of the following images in his gallery are fairly accurately located.

Those buildings under construction in the background look a bit too big for 1950s Aberdeen.

Hi David, I had the same thought, but Aberdeen b and d are definitely Aberdeen - the floating restaurant(s) prove that, and Bruce had all 4 images of the sampans together in his album, all labelled as Aberdeen. Andrew

I think this is the western end of the Causeway Bay Typhoon Shelter taken from the "arm" to Kellett Island (RHKYC). The godowns with the "saltire" probably belong to Jardines. The newer building may have been a cold storage. Some photo references here and here Not sure but the buildings under construction may be the apartment buildings on Patterson Street.

Perhaps Thomas can comment.

Hi There,

Now that Moddesy mentioned it, yes.  That newer building was still there until they tear down the site to build the Excelsior Hotel\World Trade Centre.   The noon-day gun was somewhere in the courtyard between the buildings.

The building under construction with the concrete frames were likely the first blocks of residential building on Paterson Street, which still stand today.  They were 'bricked-up' later as far as I could recall.  At least drilling the wall usually had red brick dust spilling out.  We do not see these kind of labour intensive building process these days.   The residential buildings all has external plumbings.  Wires are stapled onto walls with putty and paints on top of them.

In present days, most big establishment generally use pre-fabricated pieces (like lego) manufactured somewhere in China and assemble them on-site.  Otherwise, they pour concrete, including the external wall and partitions altogether with the electrical conduits and plumbing in between.

Thanks to Moddsey & Thomas for identifying this one. I've made a Place for the building with the flag, as a useful landmark for future identification: https://gwulo.com/node/43026

Thank you all for solving this one.  I have just looked at Bruce’s image, ‘Causeway Bay b’ and see that the two large blocks, under construction, are also on that one. In my own sub gallery, in the 1950s gallery, there is a colour slide photograph probably taken from the same spot but looking Northwards to Kellett Island.  It’s quite possible that Bruce, other pals and I went there together. Well done. I’ll alter the title. Andrew.
