According to Wikipedia, the key dates are as follows:

  • 1937. Previous Market demolished
  • 1938. Construction of the current building completed.
  • 1939. Market re-opened on 1st May.
  • 2003. The market closed. The building is still there today, but remains closed.

Greetings.  It was either 1949 or 1950 when I first set foot in this market with my mother and her sister.  Auntie bought me a cooked chicken drumstick.  Can't remember how it tasted except that I was the only person munching away.  Vegetable, seafood, live animal and bird stands made up the bulk of the market, and very few stands were selling cooked meats.  Regards,  Peter
