Carl Smith Collection Card - can anyone help with content please?
Primary tabs
Hi
I hope that this is an appropriate question to ask on this forum....my apologies if not.
The exact exerpt from the card is below . I understand everything except the last line (which I think means that the source of the information is from the godfather G.T.Cruz) I don't know what "SP:" means other than possibly Spanish or sponsor. Has anyone else found something similar and knows what it means please?
"...Baptisms at R.C. Cathedral, H.K
1895, 12th July, Henrici Ilarii, b. 30 Apr., bapt. at Canossian Convent Chapel, illegitimate child (?) (sic) of Reolandi Henrich Rochfort Wade and Chinese woman Qui Fook.
SP: de fuente patrino G.T. Cruz......."
Thanks
re: Carl Smith Collection Card
Hi Colette,
Someone else had a similar question recently. I've just sent an email to the PRO asking if they have any glossary of the terms used on these cards. I'll post up the reply here when I get it.
Regards, David
Re: Carl Smith Collection Card
Hi David,
Very much appreciated and sorry, I hadn't thought of asking the PRO.
Just out of interest, I've had absolutely no response to the email I sent to the Catholic Diocesan Archives several weeks ago. However, my brother will be spending 3 days in Hong Kong in July and will be following Patricia's advice to approach one of the churches. I'll post if there are any more helpful tips after that.
Thanks
Colette

just a guess really, since this was registration of an illegitimate child not by the father, sp could be source of paternity as recognised by the godfather
carl smith abbreviations
Hi Colette
Yes, SP does regularly mean sponsor i.e. godparent in the catholic records in Carl Smith. It turns up a lot in the records I've searched, and just to confirm, where I've managed to get a (modern) copy of the birth cert, these names appear there.
BTW, a church I'd given up on in terms of getting any information has just turned up trumps and sent me a scan of the original certificate ... some great dodgy latin in that, too!
all the best
Patricia

Hi Patricia
Thanks for your post, confirms my thoughts. And yes, dodgy latin, german, spanish - a great mix!
Just out of interest, I don't recognise BTW - is it a Catholic church?
