This picture was taken by my father and I think it was taken from St. George's House and opposite is the Hong Kong Club. It must have been an official occasion and I am not sure if that is the Governor or a member of the royal family - i.e. the Duke of Edinburgh? I have copied a slide - so there is no notation to look for!

It looks like the Duke of Edinburgh's monogram. If so, this photo was taken on 7 March 1959 prior to Prince Philip leaving Queen's Pier by Royal Barge to Kai Tak. See: http://gwulo.com/node/1380

Thank you moddsey and 80's kid - this is fascinating and I enjoyed the video very much. My parents went to the garden party at Government House but I didn't spot them on the film! In fact there are other videos on the site too which I will look at as I remember, as a child, seeing Princess Alexandra and also Princess Margaret when they came to HK - we were there in school uniforms waving little Union Jacks! Thank you again.
