I seem to have an impression that the tourists' Lift there used to be the first of its kind in town.

great lift - rode it on rainy afternoons the year it opened, up down up down.  the hotel had thoughtfully placed sofas on every landing which we sat on contemplating the view and getting up to speed with gossip :)  the hotel staff were fab, never once kicked us out either unlike some other places which will remain nameless!
