Here's the inscription from his gravestone in Hong Kong Cemetery:

09---/05/06-Sacred/ to the memory/ of/ WILLIAM EWART/ Late master of the ship/ 'Gem of the North?/ who died ?th September 1858/ aged 36 years. (4 lines. illegible)

Notes from Peter Chard, a descendant of William Ewart:

He was born in Kirkbean in Kirkcudbrightshire in 1822 but I have not been able to trace any church records of his birth. Oddly enough he returned to his village of birth to baptize all his children though he was Liverpool based just prior to obtaining his Mates certificate and eventually his Masters certificate.

The ship he commanded at the time of his death was actually named " GEM OF THE NITH " and was a three masted barque. The port of registry was Dumfries and the Registration number was 2959. She was built at Sunderland in 1855, the owner was John Martin, of Glencaple, with the full 64 shares.

I have no knowledge of his time in Hong Kong other than the port was a regular port of call. I suspect that he died of either cholera or yellow fever.  Kind regards Peter Chard, Auckland NZ.
